Black Alder Ranch is a small family farm in central Idaho. Our goal is to produce and share our own naturally raised products and food from our ranch. We are slowly developing the property into a permaculture farm.
We want to be as self-sustaining as possible, raising, growing and producing our own beef, pork, chevon, poultry, eggs, milk, fruits and vegetables.
Adding to our larder with seasonal wild game and fish, as well as local wild growing foods, such as elderberries, huckleberries, raspberries, blackberries and mushrooms!

We believe in...
... raising livestock caringly, with respect and concern for the well-being of the whole animal (both physically and psychologically).
... free-ranging and pasturing our livestock, supplying them with proper shelter, clean water, and forage in a natural environment.
... lots of interaction with our livestock. We enjoy the animals and like to spend time with them, not only just providing for their needs.
... having a great respect for and appreciating all the things that our animals give to us - from their companionship and the enjoyment of their unique behaviors and characters, to the nutrition they provide for our family.
... a natural, chemical free environment for our family and livestock: we do not routinely use pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilizers. We prefer to use natural products in our preventive routines to control pests & parasites.
... feeding all natural vegetarian feeds. We get our hay and grains from local producers who pride themselves on natural and quality ingredients. We do not use hormones or steroids, ever!
... an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure! We are confident that by utilizing strict husbandry practices providing a clean, healthy and natural environment and a proper diet of natural foods, our animals will consequently maintain a high immune system, with better resistance to pests, diseases and sickness. No subtherapeutic antibiotics or medications are ever given at any time, and only those medication prescribed by our Veterinarian are used if an animal does become ill.
... sustainable biodynamic agriculture and integrated natural farming methods. We are modeling our farm and practices after the people who lived it for real - early homesteaders who had to rely on themselves for survival - using old-fashioned common sense and working with the natural environment, the land, and animals, to develop a permaculture system.

I will have the courage to live a life true to myself,
not the life others expect of me.
not the life others expect of me.
