None of them have started laying yet, which could be because we have not used any artificial light to stimuate egg production - as a matter of fact, we have not had a single home-grown chicken egg in several weeks!
I have been strongly debating with myself about adding artificial light. On one hand, we need the eggs, and the chickens are eating quite a bit, and with no eggs coming out, it feels like the food (and thus dollar bills) is just being pooped out instead... plus we have to buy eggs in the store, which I really dislike doing.
But on the other hand, I have read that "pushing" chickens to lay shortens their egg-laying years and that is natural for chickens to rest during the darkest part of the year.
As you may have come to realize, I am zany over natural anything - but we are not getting anything natural if we are eating store-bought eggs!
I had hoped that with the young hens "coming of age" in late fall that they would lay despite having less light - but so far, not one single egg - from the old or the young.
I am still hopeful however - Holiday cooking is right around the corner and I would sure love to make home-made goodies with the home-grown goodness of all natural farm eggs!
