The moisture in the air and the low temperatures creates a thick frost on everything - the trees, fences and brush, so that the whole world turns white - from the sky to the ground. Even sounds seem muffled and dim.
Inversions! We get them frequently here in the rolling hills of Idaho. They cause dull gray days filled with damp and fog where everything seems to be shrouded in a cloak of mist and mystery. For the first few days of an inversion, I actually enjoy the fog. It feels so calm and peaceful - you feel like you are cushioned from the rest of the world and worries.
